Like we take care of other organs valuing their function in our body, we have to maintain and nourish our skin as well. The first thing anyone remembers about the skin is the skin color. The color of our skin is determined by a chemical called melanin which is a natural pigment giving color to our skin.

Irrespective of the melanin content that is naturally present in our skin; our skin tends to become darker with time and exposure to various physical and chemical elements. Our skin is an organ that is constantly in touch with the environment, hence sunlight, pollution, stress; uneven lifestyle causes it to go dull with time.

Specifically, the outer layer of skin or the epidermis makes new cells every two to three weeks hence the dead cell count builds upon the surface. This makes the skin look dark and dull. There are various home remedies or tips that can help in lightening the skin and restoring its original pigment/color.
1. Exfoliation

Our skin cells get regenerated every two to three weeks depending on one’s natural cycle. However, this leads to a dead skin build-up which gives the skin a dull and dark appearance. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the skin surface so that it can expose the new skin layer of natural color. This leads to a lightened effect.
2. Cleansing

Our skin is exposed to a lot of pollutants while we go about our daily life. Dust, direct exposure to sunlight, contact with chemicals have a very adverse effect on the skin. A regular cleansing massage with olive oil and honey can help in opening up the pores on the skin and removing the dirt settled in. People with oily skin can remove the pack using lukewarm lemon water for better effects.
3. Moisturization

Regular usage of moistures helps in keeping the skin sealed and not let out its natural oils. It also prevents the external dirt particles settled in the skin pores. There is no shortage of moisturizers in the market however most of the branded moisturizers contain some chemicals or artificial elements that can lead to side effects. One should be cautious while purchasing any such products.

There are many natural options available for moisturizers. Some of the effective natural moisturizers are coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, etc. If you prefer a store-bought cream, make sure to check the ingredients carefully.
4. Face packs

Face packs made of natural substances such as fruits, oils help in rejuvenating the skin by removing the dirt particles, working on the pores and providing the essential nutrients to the skin. While there are a lot of face pack combinations available, there are some common and time-proven combinations that are found to be more effective. Yogurt and honey are one of those.

The lactic acid present in yogurt and the antioxidant characteristic of honey combines to work magic on the skin. Papaya lime face pack, avocado face pack, etc are some of the other options that can be used.
5. Natural Bleach

Bleaching is the process of lightening one’s skin. This can be done using natural ingredients as well to avoid any side effects. Two spoons of lemon peel powder combined with 1 teaspoon of honey and 2 teaspoons of lime juice act as a very good natural bleaching agent. This leads to getting an even and lightened skin tone.

6. Skin treatments

The darkness is one’s skin tone can also be due to the underlying skin issues. One very popular and common such issue is acne. Acne and acne scars get healed by using an antioxidant based remedy. Garlic oil can be applied on the skin till it dries to help with acne. Alternatively, garlic cloves soaked in milk can also be used for the same.
7. Sleep patterns

The dullness or darkness in the skin is generally because our skin isn’t getting enough blood supply or oxygen. Similarly to how pollutants cut off the oxygen exposure for the skin, irregular sleep patterns lead to a reduction in blood supply and consequently oxygen supply for the skin. This makes the skin look darker in appearance. A proper sleep cycle and peaceful sleep pattern can help combat this.
8. Food intake

Certain food types that have excess oil, unhealthy fatty acids can have direct and indirect effects. They prohibit the skin from getting its essential nutrients. There are also some superfoods such as garlic, avocados, pineapples, etc that help in skin lightening.
Methods to achieve skin whitening:
1. Cosmetic procedures

There are various skin whitening procedures that are carried out by medical practitioners to achieve a lighter and even skin tone. These procedures lighten the skin tone by reducing the melanin content in the skin. This is usually done by laser treatment methodologies.
